Rookie Officials in the SECIn the SEC, first year officials are seldom “rookies.” Most SEC referees have a lot of experience working high school and other FBS college games. Bussert is quick to remind that he never came up with any passing routes or formations and that the NFL was a passing league as early as the 1930s. And even if he wasn’t leading the charge, when the league began to drift away from that when passing was more difficult because defenses could do whatever they wanted to receivers wherever they wanted on the field Bussert was there as a reminder for the competition committee.
The peaceful demonstrations by some of our players have generated a wide array of responses. Those opinions are protected speech and a freedom that has been paid for by the sacrifice of men and women throughout history. Everyone from bloggers to national radio hosts claim the Titans are just continuing the NFL efforts to blackball Kaepernick for his role in starting the national anthem protests last year. “We very purposely put ‘Big Brother Canada’ on Slice in order to give Slice a real kick, to bring a new audience to discover Slice,” said Williams. “Those two seasons of huge numbers put Slice on the map in a big way that it hadn’t been before. Then ultimately there’s a business decision here. ‘Big Brother Canada’ is a very expensive show to make and specialty platforms can only generate so much revenue, that’s just the way our business works. A bigger platform generates a bigger revenue, even if the audiences are relatively similar. So we really believe by moving it to Global, not only will we grow that audience one step further but we have an opportunity to monetize it quite differently on the bigger platform as well.”
The idea came up in the negotiations that led to the 2011 labor deal between the league and union following a lockout. The owners proposed cutting the preseason from four to two games per team and increasing the regular season from 16 to 18 games. The union objected vehemently on player safety grounds. The league dropped the proposal and said that it would not change the length of the season in the future without the players’ consent.

Once you get through all the issues that Mr. Goodell cites, the real bottom line is never mentioned. The league is losing money, and many fans are turning away. Losing money hurts the NFL more then then any social issues they may want to put forth. Why weren’t the players disciplined for not following NFL rules? Because initially their pocket books and revenues weren’t hurt. Mr. Goodell is a hypocrite. Why doesn’t he just come out and state “guys, we are losing money and that could lower your way overblown salaries”? A lot of empty stands during the last couple of games. The fans are a lot more powerful then the NFL. Deal with it, Roger!
I think there’s still a pretty good market for college sports rights, and to date, none of the Power 5 conferences has gotten a worse deal than its previous contract, so things are still on the rise. And in the ACC’s case, its deal with ESPN goes through 2035 36. That’s that’s a loooooong time to go before worrying about renegotiating it. But at some point soon, it’s going to hit a ceiling. You’ve already seen it with the Conference USA TV deal. I do wonder how much of an effect that has on coaching contracts/facility upgrades. Alabama’s not payingNick Saban north of $11 million because the SEC has a good TV contract (though it helps), and it’s not able to have NFL like facilities because of that either. It can do that primarily because it takes in nearly $30 million from donors each year. At a certain point, I’d like to think donors would start to balk if their school is paying a coach $20 million a year, especially if the players continue to get roughly nothing by comparison, but we haven’t hit that mark yet. I think that’s what everyone at these schoolsin positions of power in charge of finances are trying to figure out: what’s the limit? How long will this continue to trend upward? Like predicting the stock market, that’s a tough thing to project.
